3. LEADERS COMMUNICATE DECISIONS

| Allan Colman

The more I get to know people, the more I love my dog!

Frederick the Great

Third in the Leadership Laws is communicating decisions to those who will implement them. Your clarity matters—not just for your team, but also for the marketplace, investors, and media. Know the people you rely on, and build strong connections; effective leaders make communication a two-way street.

Preparation builds trust. Use notes, research, and collaborative definition of needs and goals. State objectives clearly, and consider AI tools to confirm information. Strong relationships, inside and outside the organization, reduce complexity and speed results.

We are all in the people business. Every product or service is created, delivered, and bought by people—so know who you can depend on at every level. As Frederick the Great said, “The more I get to know people, the more I love my dog!”

Think back to when you were a follower: did your leader listen, decide, and follow up? Google’s clear internal communications, such as the launch of Google Zeitgeist, show how listening can spark innovation.

Our U.S. and Canada Client Retention Survey found “Diminished Communications” was the top reason clients left—36% cited poor contact. Leaders must ensure those charged with communicating decisions follow up consistently.

When we put our best foot forward, the other one had better be good enough to stand on.
